Who are the Batwa?

Challenges Faced by the Batwa
Today, the Batwa communities in Bwindi, Mgahinga, Rushaga, Kisoro, Kabale, and Kanungu face numerous challenges:

• Poverty: The Batwa are among the poorest communities in Uganda, with limited access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.
• Limited access to education: Batwa children often do not attend school, as they are forced to work to support their families.
• Poor health: The Batwa have limited access to healthcare, and diseases like malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS are prevalent.
• Discrimination: The Batwa are often discriminated against, and their rights are frequently ignored.
• Landlessness: The Batwa were forcibly removed from their ancestral lands, and many now live in makeshift settlements without secure tenure.
• Cultural erosion: The Batwa’s rich cultural heritage is under threat, as their traditional way of life is rapidly disappearing.
