Every year, millions of animals begin one of the most spectacular journeys on Earth.
Across the plains of Tanzania and Kenya, enormous herds of wildebeest move across the Serengeti and Masai Mara ecosystem in search of fresh grass and water.
You’ve probably seen the dramatic photographs:
Wildebeest packed together as they cross a river.
Crocodiles waiting below.
Dust rising behind thousands of animals.
Lions watching from the grass.
But the Great Migration is much more than a dramatic river crossing.
It is a year-round cycle of survival, reproduction, predators, weather and instinct.
So what actually happens?
What Is the Great Migration?
The Great Migration is the annual movement of approximately 1.5 million wildebeest, along with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem.
It isn’t really one single event.
There isn’t a particular day when “the migration starts.”
Instead, the animals continuously move in response to rainfall, fresh grass and water.

The migration is spread across a huge landscape.
Different herds can be in different locations at different times.
Some may already be moving while others remain behind.
There can be enormous concentrations of animals in some areas and smaller groups elsewhere.
May–June: The Great Trek North
By late spring and early summer, large numbers of wildebeest begin moving toward the western Serengeti and then northward.
This period can produce spectacular scenes.
Thousands upon thousands of animals move across the plains.
The sound alone can be incredible.
Hooves hitting the ground.
Animals calling.
Dust rising.
Predators following.
Zebras moving alongside wildebeest.
The landscape seems to move.
July–September: The Famous River Crossings
This is the part most people associate with the Great Migration.
The herds reach northern Tanzania and eventually cross into Kenya’s Masai Mara.
And then come the rivers.
The Grumeti River and Mara River can become major obstacles.
This is where migration becomes one of nature’s most dramatic survival stories.
Thousands of animals may gather along the riverbank.
They hesitate.
They move forward.
They stop.
More animals arrive behind them.
Eventually, something triggers the movement.
And suddenly the herd starts descending toward the water.
Why Are River Crossings So Dangerous?
Because the river is full of hazards.
Strong currents
Wildebeest are powerful animals, but crossing a deep river filled with fast-moving water is difficult.
Animals can lose their footing or become separated from the herd.
Crowding
This is one of the biggest dangers.

Do Wildebeest Know Where They’re Going?
This is one of the most fascinating questions.
The migration is not controlled by a single leader.

That’s why the migration isn’t perfectly predictable.

Nature doesn’t work that way.
October–November: The Journey South
After spending time in Kenya, the herds gradually begin moving south again.
The short rains begin to influence the landscape.
Fresh vegetation appears.
The animals follow.
They cross back toward Tanzania and eventually return to the southern Serengeti.
And the cycle begins again.
December: Back to the Serengeti
By the end of the year, many of the herds have returned toward the southern Serengeti.
The landscape becomes increasingly important for the upcoming calving season.
Then, once again, babies are born.
The predators return.
The grass is consumed.
The rains change.
And eventually the great journey begins again.
The migration never really ends.
It simply continues.
What Happens to the Zebras?
Wildebeest aren’t alone.
Large numbers of zebras travel with them.
The two species complement each other because they have different feeding preferences.
Zebras tend to consume taller grasses, while wildebeest can feed on shorter grasses that remain.
This creates a fascinating partnership.
They also benefit from safety in numbers.
More animals means more eyes watching for predators.
And What About the Predators?
The Great Migration isn’t just a story about herbivores.
It also fuels an enormous predator ecosystem.
Lions follow the herds.
Cheetahs hunt vulnerable young animals.
Hyenas take advantage of opportunities.
Leopards patrol the surrounding woodland.
Crocodiles wait at river crossings.
The migration effectively moves a massive food source through the ecosystem.
For predators, it can be feast time.
For the prey, it is a constant fight to survive.
Is the River Crossing the Best Part?
Not necessarily.
This is an important misconception.
River crossings are spectacular, but they represent only one part of an approximately year-long cycle.
Some travelers spend thousands of dollars trying to time their safari around a river crossing.
But you can have an extraordinary migration experience without seeing one.
Watching thousands of wildebeest spread across the Serengeti plains can be just as unforgettable.
So can seeing newborn calves during calving season.
Or watching predators hunt.
Or simply sitting quietly as an enormous herd moves across the horizon.
Can You Predict the Great Migration?
Not exactly.
You can understand the general seasonal pattern, but you cannot guarantee exactly where the herds will be on a particular day.
That’s because the migration responds to nature.
Rainfall is one of the biggest variables.
This is why experienced safari operators monitor conditions and adjust itineraries when possible.
The goal shouldn’t be to chase one photograph.
It should be to experience the ecosystem.
When Should You Go?
Your ideal travel period depends on what you want to see.
January–March
Best for: Calving season and newborn wildebeest.
April–June
Best for: Following the herds as they move north and experiencing the Serengeti in a greener period.
July–September
Best for: Northern Serengeti and Masai Mara, with potential river crossings.
October–December
Best for: The herds’ return toward Tanzania and the beginning of the next cycle.
But remember:
Migration timing changes from year to year.
There is no guaranteed calendar.
The Great Migration Is About More Than Wildebeest
This is perhaps the most important thing to understand.
The Great Migration isn’t simply:
“Wildebeest go from Tanzania to Kenya.”
It is an enormous ecological system.
Rain creates grass.
Grass supports herbivores.
Herbivores support predators.
Predators influence animal behaviour.
Rivers create obstacles.
Birds and scavengers clean up what remains.
Dung returns nutrients to the soil.
And eventually the animals move again.
Everything is connected.
Why the Great Migration Is One of Africa’s Greatest Experiences
There is something humbling about watching thousands of animals move across a landscape with no human schedule.
They aren’t performing.
They aren’t waiting for tourists.
They are simply following a cycle that has existed for generations.
And that is what makes the experience so powerful.
You may watch a herd disappear over the horizon.
You may see a mother protecting her newborn.
You may witness a river crossing.
Or you may spend an entire afternoon watching the animals graze peacefully.
There is no guarantee what the day will bring.
