The birds

Two dozen birds that live nowhere else on Earth.

1,088 kinds in a country the size of Great Britain. All of Canada has 704.

Found nowhere else

One forest holds every one of them.

Twenty-four of Uganda’s birds live nowhere else in the world, and a single forest, Bwindi, is the only place you can find all of them, the Rwenzori Turaco in green and violet and crimson among them. Uganda holds roughly half of all of Africa’s birds.

The shoebill

A grey bird the height of a child, still as a statue.

Birders cross oceans for the shoebill. It stands chest-high, holds a pose for hours in the papyrus, then strikes. The crowned crane on the flag wears a crown of gold and dances.
